Vains of Jenna, De Verlichte Geest 06/09/11
Some of us, here at RR, were waiting already quite a bit to see the Swedish band Vains Of Jenna perform. We missed them the last time around and heard nothing but good stuff from the – to Los Angeles relocated – boys of VOJ.
So when the day came, we glammed up, packed our smiles in the back of the van and headed off to Roeselare. And we did so in a timely manner, hours before the gig. So of course we were too late, missed Roxx Action and the first songs of Dead City Ruins. The horribly named band surprised us nevertheless: the Australian heavily tattooed and leather clad gentlemen provided us with straightforward rockin’ tunes with some blues / boogie- influences. Think AC/DC, Aerosmith and the likes. Cool band with growing potential, me thinks.
Next up: Vains Of Jenna. And I have to tell upfront – maybe the expectations were too high – but the band delivered a mixed bag of songs and attitude. We all witnessed a show that started off with a bang and some ripping and tearing but all too quick everything started to sound like a paid rehearsal. The sound was rather thin; an Oasis-song was brought and sung by one of the guitarists and things started to look bleak. But low and behold, the band regained some strength and finished with a couple of songs from the first 2 (excellent) albums. End good, all good and I will give them the benefit of the doubt but next time around I want to have my socks blown off, guys, nothing less …
Thxx to Kris Vandekerckhove en Bart Vryghem for the review and the pics!
