Tijs gave me this little number, called ‘Adult Oriented Candy’. Rather the title sounds jummy or is it just a synonym for the infamous pleasure stick which makes the ladies scream for more? Anyway, this is the second album made by 80’s mastermind Julian Angel and his band Beautiful Beast. Julian keeps the rock spirit of the 80’s intact by living, breathing and spitting glamour for years now, even when it means getting his ass kicked; he doesn’t f’n care! Well, since he stays true to the Glam scene, he deserves a lot of credit. What better way to review this release? Let’s take a look!
Listening to this album, you’ll notice it mixes influences from all the great bands who rule(d) the Glam world in past and present. Poison, Ratt, Warrant, Def Leppard…you name it. Though, besides these big names, there’s creeping a itchy feeling about Beautiful Beast. At times, lyrically and musically it’s getting more like Steel Panther than a ‘real’ Glam act. Just take a look at the cover… But anyhow, it never gets too sexual and that’s a pro (pfieww).
Okay, let’s sum up the facts about this brand-new disc:
We start off with “Showdown”, which kicks in heavenly. You’ll hear this track has the right amount of heaviness mixed with pop. Besides that it’s easy listening (good Glam Metal does that). Julian’s voice sounds like Olli Herman’s, but less polished and a bit raunchy. It’s something different in contrast to the almost too common high notes and screams front men HAVE to sing these days (I personally think that’s bullsh*t). Refreshing!“Do You Want It” is kinda Warrant meets Danger Danger. A sappy mid-tempo song with a catchy chorus. Very enjoyable. Could have been a single by Def Leppard (and I won’t be surprised Beautiful Beast got inspired by them).
With the third track, I almost thought I was playing Twisted Sister’s “Bad Boys of Rock ‘n Roll”. “Ride with the Wild One” is a good up-tempo song with Julian’s voice sounds even more like Olli’s when he was in Crashdiet/The Unattractive Revolution days. Great job!
“Tokyo Nights” definitely is my very favorite on this record! A slow rocker in the vein of “18 and Life”. Although it’s very good, I get an ‘Asian Hooker’ feeling with it. Luckily, lyrically it’s quiet serious and no nonsense as in Steel Panther’s song Reckless Love seems to be present (again) on this track: awesome vocals again by Julian and musically it hits the nail on the head. Now I’ve said it multiple times I’ll stop mentioning.
The next one up is “Juvenile Affaire”, sounding like a Van Halen track, meeting Diamond Rexx in the beginning and Poison in the end. “Oh Valerie” is okay, but that’s all I can say about this one. Probably influenced by the first wave of Glam; simple and catchy. Nothing wrong with that.
“Save My Heart” is the all too common power ballad. Good but nothing special. The heaviness of Beautiful Beast returns with the song “Rock all Arenas”. Great guitar riffs that kicks you right in the guts. “Wild Tonight” is a catchy song as we know it and the glamboiis wrap it up with the sappy power ballad “Still I dream of you” and the ultimate party song: "Singer and Guitarist In A Hair Band". A sweet and enjoyable ending.
I really enjoyed listening to Adult Oriented Candy. I only wished the guys from Beautiful Beast got themselves a more “mature” view towards AOR/Glam Metal. Sometimes, it gets a bit lame, a bit cheesy and some songs are more like rip-offs from 80’s hits instead of new material. But then again I think Julian is stuck in the 80’s like all of you Sleazers, so f*ck originality!
Anyhow, if you think bands like Reckless Love, Steel Panther and other AOR/Glam bands are the f’n sh*t, be sure to get yourself a copy (or two). If not: Sign up for the Hair Metal Newsletter on http://beautifulbeastrock.com and get two free mp3 downloads.
